Part of the armoury of equipment and expertise that we have at our disposal for the care of your pet is ECG (electrocardiography) or heart monitoring.
This involves sensors being placed on your pet's body which pick up the electrical activity of the heart. Ongoing information about the pet's heart rate, the size of the heart, the regularity of the pacemaker, and the healthiness of the heart muscle is given. ECG allows us to diagnose irregularities in the heart rhythm that cannot be heard with a stethoscope and allows assessment of animals with a range of different types of heart disease aiding choice of the best treatment in each individual case. It can be used during surgery to give continuous information about heart function during an anaesthetic, and can be used in the monitoring of animals after an operation, or if they need intensive care.
The technique is a quick and painless one that gives us immediate information about the status of ill pets and those under anaesthetics. It is of paramount importance in the accurate diagnosis and characterisation of heart problems giving potentially life-saving information which helps us to keep your pets safe and well.
