Advances in anaesthesia

last updated 06.08.09 « go back

Recently, huge leaps have been made in the anaesthetic medicines and equipment available to us in veterinary medicine, and it's now safer than ever before for your pet to have an anaesthetic. Of course there are still risks, but these are minimised in fit, healthy animals and even those pets at higher risk due to underlying disease or old age can be anaesthetised more safely.

As well as a thorough examination prior to anaesthesia, we can offer pre-anaesthetic blood tests to check for underlying diseases and then use this information to plan the safest anaesthetic for that pet. We can provide IV drips during surgery to help vital organs stay well hydrated, and can monitor blood pressure to ensure it remains sufficient. Our highly trained staff are experienced anaesthetists and will be on hand to monitor and record your pet's heart, breathing rate and level of consciousness throughout surgery. An ECG can be used to give ongoing information about your pet's heart function and, where necessary, blood levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide and red blood cells can be measured.

We can provide experienced anaesthetists, anaesthetic drugs that are safer and better understood than ever before in all types of pets, and a range of equipment that helps us to make your pet's anaesthetic as safe as possible.
